Is Hypnosis Dangerous? Let's clear the misconceptions about hypnosis. Myth No.1 You can be hypnotized to do everything unconsciously. Fact: The hypnotherapist is simply a facilitator. They cannot "force" you to do anything you do not want to do. In fact, during a hypnotic session, you are fully aware of everything that is happening. In other words, if you don't agree with the suggestions, you have the authority to stop the therapist.
Myth No.2 You will always tell the truth while under hypnosis, and you may even reveal personal information. Fact: You can lie under hypnosis just as easily as you can in a waking state. Because hypnosis allows you greater access to unconscious resources, you may be able to tell more creative lies while in trance. Furthermore, you have complete control over what you choose to reveal or keep hidden (International medical and dental association).
Myth No.3 Hypnosis isn’t an effective modality. Fact: A Comparison Study Shows: “Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions. Behaviour Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions. Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions” Source: American Health Magazine (International medical and dental association)

So, contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not as dangerous as you may believe. As therapists, we cannot force someone to do something they do not want to do.
